Oil and Water Release Party w/ Steve Duin and Shannon Wheeler

Posted on November 9th, 2011

Bridge City Comics is proud to announce our Oil and Water Release Party on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 from 6pm - 9pm! This event is free to the public. In attendance to sign autographs will be author Steve Duin (writer of Oil and Water, columnist for The Oregonian) and artist Shannon Wheeler (artist on Oil and Water, creator of Too Much Coffee Man). Copies of the book will be available for sale ($19.99) during the event.

When ten Oregonians travel to the Gulf Coast in August 2010 to plumb the devastation wrought by the Deepwater Horizon spill, they discover that "Oil and Water" is just the first of the insoluble contradictions. Between the tarred sands of Grand Isle and the fouled waters of the Louisiana bayou, they come to find out that Gulf Coast residents are economically dependent upon the very industry that is wreaking havoc on their environment. In the shadow of the greatest ecological disaster of our time, they are forced to reassess their roles as witness, critic and environmental steward.

In this 144-page graphic novel - written by Steve Duin, a columnist for The Oregonian, and illustrated by Eisner-winning New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler - readers will tour the shark-pocked beach at Grand Isle with the local head of Homeland Security; step aboard the crabbing boat of a 20-year-old Mississippian who works 16-hour days and spends his nights dreaming of M.I.T.; enter the "Hot Zone" where volunteers work desperately to save brown pelicans drenched in British petroleum; and hear shrimpers, Vietnamese and good ol' boys alike, describe what happens to their livelihood when 200 million gallons of oil flood the scene. The readers' perspective on what hope and what mission remains along a ravaged coastline, and one awash in both seafood and oil, will be changed as irrevocably as that of these ten Oregonians.

Dear Creature Release Party w/ Jonathan Case

Posted on October 12th, 2011

Bridge City Comics is proud to announce our Dear Creature Release Party with Jonathan Case on Friday, October 14, 2011 from 6pm Ğ 9pm! This event is free to the public. Jonathan will be in attendance to sign autographs but offering sketches will be at his discretion.

Join us to celebrate the release of TWO great books from local artist Jonathan Case! Jonathan illustrated Dark Horse Comics critically-acclaimed Green River Killer: A True Detective Story (released August 2011) and we're also celebrating the release of the book he wrote and illustrated, Dear Creature from Tor Books!

Bridge City Comics will have copies of Dear Creature ($15.99) and Green River Killer: A True Detective Story ($24.99) on hand for purchase during the event, as well as a special, limited event-only print created by Jonathan Case!

About Dear Creature:
Grue has found Shakespeare's plays in cola bottles and, through them, a new heart. Now he yearns to join the world above. When he finds love in the arms of Giulietta, a woman trapped in her own world, he believes his prayers are answered. But people have gone missing and Giulietta's nephew is the prime suspect. With his past catching up to him, Grue must decide if becoming a new man means ignoring the monster he was. Rising from a brine of drive-in pulp and gentle poetry, Dear Creature is the love story you never imagined!

About Green River Killer:
Throughout the 1980s, the highest priority of Seattle-area police was the apprehension of the Green River Killer, the man responsible for the murders of dozens of women. In 1990, with the body count numbering at least forty-eight, the case was put in the hands of a single detective, Tom Jensen. After twenty years, when the killer was finally captured with the help of DNA technology, Jensen spent 180 days interviewing Gary Leon Ridgway in an effort to learn his most closely held secrets--an epic confrontation with evil that proved as disturbing and surreal as can be imagined. Written by Jensen's own son, acclaimed entertainment writer Jeff Jensen, Green River Killer: A True Detective Story presents the ultimate insider's account of America's most prolific serial killer.
